Help!

I save all of my photo's to my external hard drive...because it's big and I needs lots of space because I take lots of pictures. Well, today, when I went to get some pictures off the external, I noticed that it's normal 700ishGB were only showing as 465GB...and when I went to locate the pictures...they were all gone! Every.single.jpeg.file.WAS.GONE! WHAT?! Does this mean I just lost ALL of my pictures? Does anyone know anything I can try to find these missing files? Is there recovery options? I can't imagine losing all my pictures - ugh! I have some backups - but the last time I did any backing up was last fall. That means everything else is gone - history - SO SAD!

If you're reading this and don't want it to happen to you - back up all your pictures right now! =)

Thanks in advance for any (and I'll take any) ideas!

Didn't this happen to you before, Min? Argh! How frustrating! I'll ask Jon if he knows anything when I talk to him. Dragging out the CDs to back up our files now...

Oh, Min!

Okay - here's the standard stuff:

1) does rebooting get it back?
2) right-click the drive in "My Computer" and select "Properties". Then click the "Tools" tab, and click the "Check Now" button under the Error-Checking box. UNCHECK "Automatically fix", and then click start. When it is done, does it report any errors?
3) Check your recycle bin - maybe they were accidentally deleted by a program?
4) Check the computer error logs: Under "Control Panel" > Administrative tools > Event Viewer > find the "System" log. Scroll through the list and see if there are any "disk" errors - it's possible the hard drive itself is failing and throwing errors into the log.
5) You might seriously want to invest in an online backup solution (assuming you've the bandwidth)... Backblaze is one I'm thinking of trying out ($5/mo for unlimited space)

Let me know if any of the above shows errors, etc. - I might be able to help more once the above has been looked at.

And yes - losing pics sucks. :-(

Yikes. No fun!

I copied your post and sent it to Dan to see if he has any ideas. He is on a 24 hour shift so I don't know how soon he may be able to look at the message. Hope he'll have some good suggestions and can send them by tomorrow.

Good luck.

will ask my husband, Jeff. I know he has recovered 'lost' photos for his parents in the past, actually just this weekend...I will see if he has any suggestions for you!

Hey Min -

Any luck? Or have you forsaken computers for awhile? ;-) (I know I would... if I could...)

Luv ya and hope the pics can be rescued...

Jeff said he's only ever recovered photos from photo cards, not an external hard drive. But, I know there are things you can plug your hard drive into to recover information, may want to look into that..I'm not sure how much they cost. OR, call around town and see if a computer store in the area might be able to help you.

I really hope you are able to get them back, I know how frustrating that can be!

A BIG thanks to everyone for your very helpful advice and suggestions about how to reclaim my crashed hard drive. I tried all the suggestions and everything else under the sun...nothing seemed to work. It is now with my pooped out laptop at the computer repair shop. =) My friend's husband is also graciously willing to try to retrieve the lost files if the computer repair place can't recover them. Thanks again for all the help! I really really appreciate it!
