This will hopefully be the first of my “deployment” blogs. As you may or may not know, I am deploying soon- how soon is still a bit foggy, but suffice to say it is very soon and my next post could likely be from someplace other than Germany (how’s that for subtlety?). My intent is to blog as often as possible over the next 12-15 months (still hoping for 12, Congress!), and hopefully I can convey what it feels like to be there in Iraq, away from my family, and everything else that goes along with the whole experience.
I initially thought about doing a separate blog altogether- I even thought about doing it anonymously so I could let fly about anything and everything- but settled on doing it here. Why? I guess I figured that an event that affects my entire family should be viewed through the proper lens, and that would include my perspective in Iraq as well as Mindy’s and the boy’s from back here.
I am not planning on getting too “Deep Thoughts” on everyone, but am looking forward to the chance to kick around any topics that pop into my head (or your heads). I would love lots of feedback from anyone and everyone who reads; from little one line “thinking/praying about yous” to full fledged “give us your description of how things are going there,” they are all more than welcome. Obviously there are some rules I have to abide by, so be forewarned- I can’t do specific stuff (“What is your 10-digit MGRS grid, Chris?” or “What time do your guys roll out every morning?”), and I can’t really go too far with my crazy opinions on things (“Do you hate George Bush?”), but I would love to talk about anything else. I expect to work the night shift in a fairly low-intensity area, so I may just need this as my escape.
So I started packing tonight. I am at least a week overdue, but it can be hard to come to grips with this whole thing. I’ve been to Iraq once before (for those that didn’t know that) and I’ve been on Lord knows how many field problems in my six plus years in the Army Experience, so you would think I would have this packing thing down. But this is Chris we’re talking about here- Mr. Procrastination- so this is what we get. I swore this time that I would pack early so I could spend the last few days doing whatever I wanted to do, but that slowly traded places- we’ve been cramming in all sorts of activities, and packing became the last thing to do. The actual packing is pretty easy, even if I invariably bring way more than I need…mostly because of my hatred of laundry, I have about a hundred pairs of t-shirts, undies, and socks so it takes up way more space than I would like. I will probably have most of it figured out by tomorrow, with a few extra additions for the last minute. I’m also getting a list of stuff for Mindy to mail to me once I am gone, like my PS2, my iPod radio, and a few other things too big for me to lug onto an airplane on top of everything else I have to carry.
Obviously the thing that is hardest about this whole experience is the leaving. I have this weird feeling of an impending emotional reaction…just not here at the surface yet. I don’t know if it’s denial- maybe I am just an unfeeling robo-man- but it hasn’t bubbled up yet. I feel like it’s going to clobber me once the reality sets in. I think my mind, in order to maintain my sanity and keep my heart from stopping, has decided that I will just not think about this until the absolute last moment it has to. Which, ok, I guess that’s a method.
I think the hardest thing is leaving Luke. That’s not to take anything away from Mindy or Will (Mindy and I have talked about this, and she gets it…I think…) but Luke and I have really formed a strong bond, and he’s at that age where something like this could really effect him. Mindy is a trooper- that’s thanks to the deployment and those field problems I mentioned earlier- and of course I will miss my wife. I think with Mindy my biggest concern is her left holding the bag on two kids under the age of two (not something I would ever willingly sign up for- every time she goes out and leaves me in charge, I keep a close eye on the door for her arrival…I don’t know how she does it every day. I am a big wuss). Will is in that bug-eyed, look around at everything stage, and after going through this stage with Luke I feel like we have time to catch up on missed time when I return. I will miss them both terribly, but I know they will survive. Luke on the other hand…every time I think about leaving I picture him waking up every morning for a year and asking “Daddy? Daddy?” as he walks down the hall in his PJs. And you wonder why I feel the impending emotion. Maybe it’ll be ok- “ok” being relative to those of us who know what leaving really means- but man, it breaks my heart. I am really not looking forward to that moment. I already told Mindy I was going to say goodbye at the house and walk down to work (even though families are allowed there until we go). I don’t think my soldiers will have much respect for a blubbering idiot.
OK, that's all I have to say about that. I'll post more when I can...whenever that is. Please keep all of us in your prayers as we enter this whole experience. As a wise man once said, I'll see you on the other side...

Potties and Placemats
Things have been crazy busy of late! But I thought I’d try to get in one more blog before Chris ships out. Maybe Chris will even write one before he leaves…
Thankfully, Luke is over his nasty cold. Will is still fighting his, but his lungs have cleared – praise God! He still has sinus congestion and some fluid on his ears, but he’s definitely on the mend. Chris and I are almost over ours…I pray that we don’t get sick again anytime soon…I’m not sure any of us could handle it! =)
Chris will be leaving soon. We don’t have a date yet, but we have a window. We have planned to spend this weekend just being together. I think we may even get to take Luke to the zoo tomorrow. I’m so excited to see how he reacts to seeing animals up close and personal!
Here are updates on the boys:
Luke – Luke thinks his name is “you” now. When we’ve shown him pictures of himself, we always tell him, “That’s you!” or “Who is that – it’s you!” Now he thinks “you” is his name. Now when we ask him, “Who is that?” he says “You!” We’re trying to make a conscious effort to say, “Luke” instead!
His vocabulary continues to blossom. I keep meaning to get a short video of him saying words to post. Maybe I can get one this weekend.
Thankfully with his returning health, his tantrums have lessened. Don’t get me wrong – he still has them, but at least not every other minute.
We got him a potty. I’m not going to start training him in earnest until Chris is gone and Luke has adjusted. However, I figured I would set it in the bathroom and let him take his own initiative if he wanted. He really likes sitting on it. He has yet to go potty in it – but he almost did tonight. He’ll usually tell me if he’s gone poopy (or “poot” as he puts it) but tonight he told Chris “potty” so he took him in to see if he would use it. He went pee-pee on the floor…but it was inches from the potty…so close!
Luke is still doing really well with Will. He’s shown a bit of jealousy here and there lately, but overall he still loves having Will around. I think I say, “Gentle” a million times-a-day though. He just doesn’t realize Will is still a bit fragile. I can’t wait to see them play together – it won’t be long!
I still think his favorite thing to do is read books. I think he could look at books all day long. We bought him some flash cards the other day and he enjoys going through those too. He’s getting better and better at doing motions to songs. In fact, the other day at playgroup when we were singing action songs, he grabbed Will’s arms and started helping Will do the motions. It was so sweet!
Will – Will is growing up so fast! He had his 2 month well-baby appointment last Monday. I was completely frustrated with the techs – but I won’t go into that…it only gets me steamed up. After asking the doctor, I finally found out that he weighed in just shy of 15 pounds and was 25 ½ inches long. The doctor said he was in excellent health and doing well developmentally. He also got his 2 month vaccines.
He is cooing so much now! It’s so precious. It sounds more like a very contented sigh. He’ll have a whole conversation with you too. Even Luke has started to coo back and forth with him. I know in a few months, they’ll have a language of their own!
Will is sleeping pretty well at night. He wakes up to eat, but unless he’s to congested to sleep (we still have a few of those nights) he sleeps – eats –goes back to sleep - eats - goes back to sleep…and so on. We are co-sleeping right now, but I’ll probably start moving him to his co-sleeper bassinet soon.
He still wants to be held constantly. He’s not very fussy…unless I put him down. I have my Moby wrap, but the bigger he gets…and the more weight he puts on – the harder it is to maneuver around with him - Hehehehe! I think maybe I need to start working out!! I am very pleased with the Moby though. It’s perfect when I take Luke to playgroup or the playground or out for a walk. I can just wrap Will up in the Moby and be hands free for Luke. It also works for light housework. I would definitely recommend it.
Will really likes his play gym – he’ll sit or lay underneath it and stare or bat at the toys. He also loves his Winnie the Pooh mobile on his swing. He’ll stare and stare at it. He loves to look at our faces. He’ll just stare up into our eyes – it’s priceless! He has such a sweet smile and we heard him laugh for the first time Sunday night! Chris was tickling his feet and the sweetest burst of happy sound rushed out of his mouth. It was so beautiful! I’m so happy that Chris got to hear his first laugh before he leaves. He likes it when we sing to him – and is very alert to new noises and sounds. He’s such a sweetheart!
Post-partum update:
I had my post-partum check up last week. Everything checked out ok except for my thyroid. This isn’t a new problem. Though I’ve had tests on it before, nothing conclusive ever shows up. However, the doctor felt it was too enlarged to just ignore and wants me to see a specialist. I’m hoping I can see someone at Landstuhl – but they are normally short staffed and will only see Active Duty members. I’m not sure I want to be referred out.
I’ve had a really hard time getting the weight off this time around. With Luke I had a hard time with the last 10 pounds – but this time I’m having trouble with almost half the weight I gained. I plan to start working out and dieting…I may even start a weight loss blog. I’d like to be back down to pre-pregnancy weight by the time Chris comes home on R&R.
I’ve been slowly adding a bit of dairy back into my diet. I have yet to have a glass of milk or bowl of cereal, but I think that’s my next step. Thankfully I can drink my cup of coffee in the morning again – YAY! That’s a big praise!
Alrighty, that’s all for now. Sorry it’s taken me so long to get an update up – I’ve been really behind with blogging and e-mailing lately. Once things settle down a bit, I hope to have more time to remain more consistent.
I have a TON of pictures to post; I’ll post a handful in this blog and then try to get more up soon.

Tummy Time!
Me and the boys...
This picture cracks me up. Can you tell that we've had to use the saline bottle up Will's nose a lot lately?! Luke also likes to put the aspirator (a.k.a the snot sucker) up his or Will's nose as well. He also tried to clean out Elmo's nose today. We gotta get over these colds! Anyway, the picture was originally suppose to show Luke's Presidents place mat. He likes to point out the different presidents. On a good day he can point out Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Roosevelt (Teddy), the two Bushes and Clinton. It's been awhile since we've taught him a new one. My goal is for him to know them all when Chris comes back on R&R.
Luke reading on his new potty! Don't worry, we did put the potty in the bathroom. This was taken right after we had taken the potty out of the box. =)

Luke is potty training his Chicken Elmo...
Wearing daddy's headphones...he likes to stick the adaptor up his nose...I guess he doesn't know it plugs into the computer...

"More details please..."
Hey all!
Sadly, I don’t have much time to blog at the moment, but I just had to post these pictures – I think they're hilarious!
I have talked to Luke about Daddy leaving soon – but I guess he wanted more details! I was sorting some books the other day, and had stacked them up in our bedroom. I guess he went in there and picked this one out to read in his wagon! Too funny!

Happy Easter Part 2
I was thinking about some of my favorite Easter memories and thought I would share a few on the blog.
I can remember as a child sitting around our kitchen table in our cozy little house with a pot full of hard boiled eggs, cups of food coloring water and egg cartons. It was always so much fun to gather as a family and color Easter eggs together. We would try to create different colors, designs and art work. My parents would hide them for us and we’d always go looking for them. It was always so much fun, but I think what made it even more fun was that we did it together as a family.
One year I remember my mom and dad had cut out construction paper footprints that lead us all around the house. Along the footprint path, a little Easter gift was placed. We had so much fun following our designated footprints to find our treasures! I’ll never forget doing that.
Another year I remember my mom coming in the bedroom Easter morning. The money had been a little tight but my parents wanted to give us a little gift regardless. I can remember very clearly my mom sitting on the bed saying, “we just wanted to give you something…” They had been able to purchase two cassette tapes of music and we each got one. It was so meaningful to us – even as a young child I remember that meaning a great deal to me.
When we could, each of us in the family was able to get a chocolate Cadbury egg. It was always such a treat! One year, instead of eating his, my dad split his Cadbury egg in two, put it on a plate and hid a half in each of our rooms. Then we were able to go look for them and eat the chocolate yumminess! It meant so much to us to have a little extra treat!
We always celebrated Easter together as a family and my parents always taught us that Easter was a time of celebrating Christ’s resurrection. I will always look back with fondness at the Easter's past. I only hope we can teach our children the joy and hope of Easter in the same ways our parents taught us. We are so thankful for their example.
The last few years I had the complete joy and blessing of being able to direct or co-direct the Easter Productions in our church in Manhattan. It brought me great joy to be able to share the Easter story through drama, music and multi-media. It was an amazing experience to share this time with our good friends who were always so willing to participate. I will never forget these experiences and will always look back at them as an incredibly amazing time. I loved being apart of each production and I loved working with each and every person who participated. I have so many wonderful memories of these Easters – from putting scripts and music together, to making videos, to creating – building – and decorating props and scenery, to practices, to the performances, to the fellowship with one another, to the Easter Day meals after a performance with friends.
I would love to hear about your Easter memories and/or traditions, so if you have a moment, post a few memories/traditions in the comments section. I would thoroughly enjoy reading them!
Since we’ve all been so sick, we sadly weren’t able to attend the Easter service today. After Luke’s afternoon nap, we dressed the boys in their Easter outfits and took some pictures though. We also gave Luke and Will some Easter presents. Tonight we will be sharing the Easter story with Luke and Will during our book reading time. I look forward to the traditions and memories we will make as a family throughout the years.
Luke seems to be feeling much much better. Will is still pretty miserable – and Chris and I are as well. =) Hopefully we’re not too far behind Luke in getting better!
I hope you all have a wonderful and blessed Easter!

Happy Easter!
I just wanted to wish everyone a happy and blessed Easter!
It is so good to serve a Risen Savior! As I sit here trying to think of what I want to say about Easter, I find myself without adequate words to describe how blessed, humbled and grateful I feel for the sacrifice our Lord Jesus Christ made so many years ago. So since I can’t think of the words, I’ll post this reading that expresses the message of Easter so eloquently.
He has risen!
He has risen indeed!
Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?
Death has been swallowed up in victory.
Christ has indeed been raised from the dead,
The first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.
For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead,
He cannot die again;
Death no longer has mastery over him.
For this very reason,
Christ died and returned to life
So that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.
Jesus said, “I am the resurrection, and the life.
He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;
And whoever lives and believes in me will never die.”
Thanks be to God!
He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Happy Easter!
