The night before his birthday, Luke prayed, "Bless 3-year old Luke and bless 4-year old Luke..." He was so proud that he was going to be such a big boy.
We had (for some time) excitedly talked to him about how big of a boy he was going to be...and he couldn't wait. Later that night, however, he had trouble falling asleep...finally I asked him what was wrong and he wailed, "I WANT TO STAY 3!!!" It didn't take long to realize that in his mind, turning 4 meant he was going to "grow up" in his sleep and he wasn't ready to "grow up" yet. As he cried in my arms telling me he wanted to stay 3, a part of me wanted to cry right along with him as I, TOO, wanted him to stay 3. It feels like he's growing up to fast (Will too.) But we reassured him that his body would not grow up while he was sleeping - that everything would be the same...he would still be Luke...just 4 years old.
And though he was comforted by the fact that he didn't have to become a grownup overnight, he still didn't want to be left alone...so he slept in our bed that night. And, when morning came, his previous excitement about turning 4 returned and he had a grand day!
Guka had, by request from Luke, made him a Gronckle cake. Gronckle is a dragon from the DreamWorks movie, "How to Train Your Dragon." The cake turned out AWESOME and Guka still remains the king of birthday cakes!
We had a small party with Guka, Meme, Uncle Randy, Aunt Jamie and Julianne. Luke had so much fun! He requested cheese pizza for supper, excitedly ripped open all of his presents and wolfed down his Gronckle cake.
He was happy but very exhausted at the end of the day. And that night we tucked in our 4-year old boy.
The Gronckle cake!
